The Impact of Book the Jungle Upon American Society
The Jungle (1906), the most celebrated muckraking work of its time and the only one widely read a century later, is enjoying something of a revival these days.. Chicago's meatpacking industry tried hard to prevent the book's publication, and with good reason: its appearance propelled Sinclair to world fame with stupendous suddenness. The novel was promptly translated into seventeen languages; in England, Winston Churchill, another young man on the way up, wrote a glowing 5,000-word review. The White House received a hundred letters daily about the book, and President Theodore Roosevelt, himself a writer of some accomplishment, sent Sinclair a three-page critique, deploring his socialism (as did Churchill) but inviting him to the White House for a chat. The uneasy alliance between author and President helped to see the Meat Inspection Amendment and the Pure Food and Drug Act through Congress. Arthur declares that the legislation was Roosevelt's doing far more than Sinclair's, and Mattson adds that Sinclair thought it insufficient to cope with the prevailing foulness. For him, nothing less than government-run slaughterhouses would do.

J urgis Rudkus and Ona Lukoszaite who are the poor labor from meatpacking factory of Chicago. They suffered so many hard things that couldn’t stand. They moved from Lithuania to Chicago where was known as packing town with American Dream that they would success. During winter time it was really hard to work on meatpacking factory because it was not heated at all and while working in slaughterhouse, people can see hardly. One day, Jurgis hurt his ankle because of poor working condition, but the company just cut off his pay even though it was their fault. After he was recovered he hardly got the jot at the fertilizer plant which was the foulest place in all meatpacking towns. One night Ona did not come back to home, Jurgis discovered that her boss was forced her to sleep with him, because of that Jurgis attacked him and arrested. By the unfair trial he sentenced to go to prison. After he got out from prison, he got a good job at the steel mill. After he got out from the prison, he went back to prison again because he punched someone who cheated Jurgis. While he was in prison he completely lost touch with his family, but he met Jack Duane. When he was released, Jurgis becomes Duane’s partner, and the two commit burglaries and muggings. When a series of strikes hits packingtown, Jurgis corssed the picket lines, undermining the efforts of the union but making a great deal of money as a scab. One day, Jurgis saw Phil Connor, who was a boss that was forced Ona to sleep with him, again and attacked him. He sent to prison again. One night, his spirit all but crushed by privation and misery, Jurgis wanders into a socialist political rally, in which an orator delivers a speech that fills Jurgis with inspiration. Jurgis joins the socialist party and embraces its ideal that the workers. He attends a socialist rally in which the speaker sums up Jurgis’s ne beliefs: if more people covert to socialism, the speaker declares, then “Chicago will be ours!”
